The early runs finished without any major surprises, as the top two times belonged to Americans Lauryn Williams and Elana Meyers (1:54.89) and Canadians Heather Moyse and Kaillie Humphries (1:55.12).

Prior to the first heat, Williams said she felt butterflies but was able to shove them aside and deliver a historic performance. "I got on that line and I knew something good was going to happen. Because I was literally ready to jump out of my skin, and that's a feeling I hadn't had in a while in track and field," she said. "It's good to have that feeling back, and I know what that means. That means going fast."

Williams and Meyers had only raced once before, but that mattered little due to Williams natural talent. "I did make some mistakes on the track, but I was allowed to because Lauryn, she's a killer back there," Meyers said.

Another former track star, Lolo Jones, didn't fare so well with her partner Jazmine Fenlator. They came in 11th, and the selection of Jones is being criticized rather loudly. "I get that people want to latch on to a media sensation and run wild," former Olympian Chuck Berkely said.

"But it comes down to this: There are athletes who deserve to be there who are not there, on the women's and the men's sides. And you have to ask yourself why is that the case. What is wrong with the selection process? Why is it flawed? Why is it corrupt? From my personal experience with Lolo, she's had a very bad attitude."

Jones was visibly disappointed after the rough outing, and acknowledged she was expecting an uphill fight to medal, which now seems out of reach. "Energy-wise, work-wise, it's kind of what I expected," said Jones. "I knew we were going to have to fight. It was going to be a difficult four runs, so I have prepared myself for it."
