Former NFL star Darren Sharper has been formally charged with two counts of rape in Los Angeles, where prosecutors allege he drugged multiple women before attacking them in his hotel room.

According to TMZ Sports, Sharper faces two counts of rape by use of drugs, four counts of furnishing a controlled substance and one count of possession of a controlled substance, all felonies. The website adds the former safety is accused of drugging the women with zolpidem, better known as Ambien.

According to police reports, Sharper is alleged to have met the women in a West Hollywood nightclub on the night of Oct. 30, and immediately invited them to another party. On the way to the party, investigators allege Sharper stopped off at his hotel room where he reportedly gave both women a shot which contained the drugs in question.

After both of them passed out, one of the women alleges she awoke to find herself being sexually assaulted by the 38-year-old Sharper. The second woman further alleges she awoke and "interrupted his actions."

Prosecutors say Sharper later attacked two more women after returning to the club, again using the scheme of inviting them back to his hotel room. Police report both of those women left the former Super Bowl champion's room and immediately sought medical attention.

If convicted of the charges, Sharper faces more than 30 years in prison and prosecutors are recommending that a judge set his bail at $10 million. Officials note Sharper is also accused of raping women in three other states. He has pleaded not guilty, maintaining in each instance the sex was consensual.
