Recently reassigned Texas football coach Mack Brown encouraged several of the school's top recruits to "look around" before committing to the university, according to CBSSports.com.
Brown, who now serves as a special advisor to president Bill Powers, reportedly told four-star safety John Bonney "he'll even talk to other coaches for you" if the high-school star decided to take him up on his advice.
"I was at my official visit when Mack Brown resigned and he told us to go look around," Bonney told CBS. "He said he really just wanted the best for us as players." Bonney did visit both Auburn and Baylor this month, but now insists he is firmly committed to Texas and new coach Charlie Strong.
The 62-year-old Brown coached 16 seasons at Texas, leading the Longhorns to an overall 158-48 record, including a national title in 2005 when All-American Vince Young was under center.
Over his last four years, the Longhorns struggled to a 31-21 mark, prompting calls for his ouster and the belief the program needed to go in a new direction.
After an exhaustive search that included the university expressing interest in John Gruden, Jim Harbaugh and Mike Tomlin. Strong was named Texas coach late last year.
