NHL Trade Rumors [VIDEO]: Sabres Dealing Matt Moulson To The Pittsburgh Penguins?

With a roster freeze set to go into place soon as the Winter Olympic break rapidly approaches, the trade deadline looms right after that on March 5 and many different names have entered the trade rumor mill, with the latest being Matt Moulson of the Buffalo Sabres, who could be headed to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

According to the Digital Journal, Moulson has drawn some interest from the Penguins and it could be a potential landing spot if Buffalo decides to move him. Moulson is set to be a free agent come seasons end, and was already dealt once this year when the New York Islanders shipped him off to Buffalo in exchange for fellow free agent Thomas Vanek.

Buffalo is still very much in a rebuilding phase, and it was believed that once they got Moulson they would just turn around and deal him to another team to pick up some younger players, but thus far that has not been the case. It is possible that Buffalo could still be looking to do that come the trade deadline on March 5, but it remains to be seen.

The Sabres are in a transition phase with a new head coach and new general manager, and with the Penguins knack for making deals down the stretch, it is possible that the two can work out a deal if in fact the Penguins' interest spikes.

The Sabres (14-30-8, 36 points) are the worst team in the NHL and sit at the bottom of the Eastern Conference while the Penguins (37-14-2, 76 points) remain at the top of the conference and are among the favorites to make it to the Eastern Conference Finals and possibly the Stanley Cup, so a trade would work for both sides as Buffalo will get some youth to start digging itself up from the basement in future seasons while Pittsburgh will add Moulson to an already deep lineup.

Moulson, 30, has played in 39 games with the Sabres since being dealt and has nine goals and 14 assists for 23 points and in total he has 15 goals and 17 assists for 32 points after spending his first 11 games of the 2013-14 season with the Islanders.

The Ontario native was originally drafted by Pittsburgh in the ninth round (263rd overall) of the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, but has never played for them. He's spent time with the Los Angeles Kings, Islanders and Sabres.

Moulson has appeared in 372 games over a nine-year NHL career, and has put together 133 goals and 123 assists for 256 career points.
