David "Big Papi" Ortiz is popular enough in Boston to have garnered some write-in mayoral votes during their recent elections, but if he doesn't receive a multi-year extension offer from the defending World Series champions, he's not averse to heading elsewhere.
"As long as they keep offering me a job and I keep doing what I'm supposed to do and the relationship keeps on building up, I'm going to be there. Hopefully, I won't have to go and wear another uniform," Ortiz said. And if he's not given that offer? "Time to move on."
Ortiz was the biggest reason for Boston's 2013 World Series title; he batted .668 over six games, scored seven runs, raked 11 hits including two doubles and two home runs, had six RBI and reached base at an absurd .760 clip. In his 11 seasons in Beantown he's hit .292, swatted 373 home runs, and been a key cog of three title teams.
Those numbers, especially the staggering postseason production, have led Ortiz to believe he's got quite a while before he hangs up his cleats despite being 38 years old. When asked if he really could see himself playing in another uniform Ortiz said, "I haven't seen it but if I have to, I've got no choice, I'm not going to quit. As long as I keep hitting the ball the way I have, I've got to keep on giving it a try."
He hasn't been clear though on how many years he expects to get on his next deal, and it is difficult to imagine the Sox leaving their leader out in the cold. Ortiz also said he isn't certain exactly how much longer he plans on playing.
"I don't know. I have said in a couple of interviews before, I'm feeling good," Ortiz said. "This is not a career that is forever. As long as I'm having fun like I had, as long as I keep doing what I'm doing and I'm healthy, of course, I'm going to keep on giving it a try."
