Tonight at 9:30 p.m. ET, the Phoenix Coyotes (23-17-9, 55 points) and Calgary Flames (16-27-7, 39 points) faceoff live from the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary for the fourth of five meetings against each other this season. Phoenix embarks on a three-game road trip and has won two of their last three while Calgary is 16 points behind Phoenix in the Pacific Division and has lost its last four games. The Coyotes have beaten the Flames in two out of three meeting thus far this season--both in Phoenix--while the Flames have taken the lone game in Calgary. The last time these two teams met, the Coyotes blanked the Flames 6-0 in Phoenix on Jan. 7.
The Coyotes hope captain Shane Doan will find his form soon after returning Jan. 4 from illness.
"He's slowly getting up to speed," coach Dave Tippett told the Arizona Republic. "I wouldn't say he's 100 percent yet, but he's slowly working toward that. He has lots of try, lots of push in him. He'll continue to move forward."
The Flames have struggled as of late but signed veteran forward Matt Stajan to a four-year extension worth a reported $12.5 million Monday, NHL.com reports.
"I want to be a part of what's going on here," Stajan told the Calgary Herald. "We have a lot of promise with young guys. I want to see this through. With [general manager Brian Burke] coming in and running the ship right now and seeing what he's done with previous teams, I'd love to be a part of this. My family loves it in Calgary."
The Flames have been paced by Jiri Hudler (13-27-40), Mark Giordano (7-15-22) and Mike Cammalleri (13-8-21), but Cammalleri is sidelined with a concussion. Giordano is on a four-game point streak and has two goals and two assists in that span.
The Coyotes, meanwhile, have been led by Radim Vrbata (11-24-35), Martin Hanzal (14-20-34) and Mike Ribeiro (12-21-33). Hanzal is day-to-day with a lower-body injury and could play while Keith Yandle is tied for third on the team with 33 points off of six goals and 23 assists and is on a four-game point streak where he's scored five goals.
In between the pipes, Phoenix is likely to go with Mike Smith, who is 17-14-8 with a 2.86 goals-against average and a .910 save percentage while Karri Ramo will likely suit up for Calgary and is 8-10-4 with a 2.76 GAA and a .904 save percentage.
The Coyotes look to keep their winning ways going while the Flames try to avoid a five-game skid when the puck drops tonight at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary.
