It has been widely reported that Miguel Cotto has turned down Golden Boy's offer of $10 million to face Canelo Alvarez, and that Alfredo Angulo will be the next man to face the Mexican superstar boxer on March 8th. However, that date is rapidly approaching and "El Perro" says he hasn't received a contract to sign yet.
"I haven't gotten a contract yet but hopefully what he said is true. I have had people calling me and congratulating me but I haven't gotten the official word. I would be grateful for the opportunity," Angulo said. "This would be a big opportunity for me obviously but also for him. He would have a chance to prove he belongs with the true 154 pound fighters."
There is some speculation, however, that Canelo is still holding out hope that Cotto's proposed matchup with middleweight champion Sergio Martinez falls apart. If that were the case, Alvarez could possibly scrap his plan to fight three times in 2014, and wait until June for the big-money bout with Cotto.
Both Cotto and Martinez's camps seems excited for that fight, with Martinez being particularly edgy, but he is coming off some serious injuries that might throw a wrench into everyone's plans.
Martinez's last fight, in April of 2013, saw him narrowly defeat Martin Murray in front of his countrymen in Argentina. In the process he sustained an injury to his right knee, as well as a broken left hand. He has professed that he'll be ready for Cotto, but at 38 years old setbacks during training camp are not unfathomable.
A bout between Cotto and Alvarez is absolutely better business for the Mexican; while Angulo is a noted action fighter he has lost both of his biggest fights, against James Kirkland and Erislandy Lara.
Even Alvarez's own manager preferred Carlos Molina, the IBF 154-lb. champion. In December Canelo's trainer/manager Eddy Reynoso said, "Lara is a better option [than Angulo] but the ideal opponent is the champion Molina. He has all of the merits and people saw him on pay-per-view in September, and that is something that we would be looking for."
