Yasiel Puig incited "Puigmania" last year upon being called up to the big leagues for his high energy, full speed style of play. Unfortunately Puig drives his cars full speed as well, and that got him arrested.
New video has surfaced of Puig getting arrested for surpassing 100 miles per hour in a 70 mile-per-hour zone with his mother and family members in the car. In this video Puig can be heard pleading with the arresting officer to let him go.
"This is your mom? Oh, you're going to jail. You are putting your mom in danger, oh hell no," the officer said. "Why were you driving that fast? You don't care about anyone's life in the car?"
Puig responded, "Yes, I do care. I'm sorry. Please forgive me."
Then, the officer informed Puig's mother why he was placing the Dodgers' star outfielder under arrest. "The reason why we are in this situation is because he didn't care about his mother's life or your lives, and he's going to jail," he said in Spanish.
A distraught Puig began talking to himself in the backseat of the officer's car, scolding himself, "Why do you have to drive so fast, Puig? You have to learn."
The incident was another that calls Puig's maturity and readiness to handle a full MLB season into question. While he did amazing things on the diamond, including batting .319 with 19 home runs, 42 RBI, and 11 stolen bases in 104 games while displaying a rocket arm in the outfield, he also rankled opponents with his "arrogance," and glossed over some basic MLB fundamentals.
The Dodgers are being patient with their young star, though. Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said "That may have been a moment that could be another one of those steps toward figuring it out." Puig's manager Don Mattingly weighed in as well.
"There's good and bad with Yasiel. We see the cool things he's done during the offseason and then we see this," he said. "It's something that hopefully he'll continue to grow."
