One day after former Minnesota Vikings Chris Kluwe retained a lawyer, he softened his stance.

Kluwe last Thursday wrote a scathing first-person account on Deadspin.com about the way Vikings special teams coach Mike Priefer, former head coach Leslie Frazier and general manager Rick Spielman treated him during the last of his eight seasons with the team in 2012 and his subsequent release by the team in May of 2013.

In the article on Deadspin.com, Kluwe asserted that his activism in support of same-sex marriage led to his release.

Kluwe was most critical of Priefer, whom Kluwe said used to make inappropriate comments toward homosexuals, based on Kluwe's first-person account of his mistreatment during his final season at Minnesota.

Kluwe quoted Priefer as saying, "We should round up all the gays, send them to an island, and then nuke it until it glows."

The former punter said he told his side of the story on Deadspin.com in an effort to "make sure that Mike Priefer never holds a coaching position again in the NFL, and ideally never coaches at any level."

On Tuesday, Kluwe went on Fox Sports Live and said reveled that his original letter about the Vikings' special teams coach "may have been a little too harsh."

Kluwe wants Priefer to get educated, not fired.

"After thinking about it, after reflecting on it, I don't think an appropriate punishment is if he never coaches again," Kluwe told host Charissa Thompson. "I think it would be better if he got therapy, if he got counseling, and then a year or two from now, come back into the league as a role model, help out with LGBT groups, and show people that this is an important issue."

On Monday, Sports World News reported that Kluwe hired Minneapolis lawyer Clayton Halunen and the National Center for Lesbian Rights. It is not known whether Kluwe plans to sue the Vikings or any of the coaching staff he alleges had a hand in his release.
