The Rose Bowl on New Year's Day featuring the Michigan State Spartans and Stanford Cardinal was one of the top games this season, but tonight one more game will be held before college football goes away until spring-the BCS National Championship. Seminoles fans can listen to the game on the radio but turning their dials to WTNT-FM 94.9, while Auburn fans can hear the action on 102.5 The Game.
While FSU has the 2013 Heisman Trophy winner taking snaps for their 53-points-per-game offense, Auburn has the benefit of magic on its side. Gus Malzahn has transformed a three-win team from a season ago into a title game outfit, and had some miracles go their way to reach this point.
First they had the "Immaculate Deflection." After a blown lead against the Georgia Bulldogs, a Hail Mary pass was deflected in the air and into the hands of a Tigers receiver who scored from more than 70 yards out. Then, after a week off, they topped the Alabama Crimson Tide on the strength of a 109-yard missed field goal return.
The return by defensive back Chris Davis prompted him to say immediately afterward, "We're a team of destiny. We won't take no for an answer."
Seminoles quarterback Jameis Winston may tell them no, however. This season Winston chucked the rock for 3,820 yards and 38 touchdowns against just 10 interceptions. The last time FSU took the field they slaughtered Duke 45-7 in the ACC Championship game.
"We wanted to win this championship so bad," Winston said after the game. "We were looking forward to having an undefeated season."
FSU's defense gives up a meager 10.7 points per contest, but they'll be tested by hard-charging Auburn tailback Tre Mason, who has run for 1,621 yards and 22 touchdowns this year.
