Miami Hurricanes coach Al Golden has been offered the Penn State coaching job and is expected to formally accept on Sunday, according to Florida-based radio sports host Andy Slater.
Several other media outlets have also reported Golden is expected to inform his players of his decision sometime that same day. Golden previously coached at Penn State under Joe Paterno, serving as linebackers coach in 2000. He also attended and played at Penn State and has long maintained close ties with the university.
At Miami, Golden composed a 22-15 record in three seasons and has seen his team's improve each year, despite being saddled with looming sanctions.
"Miami officials were laying the groundwork for a coaching search Friday," CaneSport.com reported. "Golden's representatives were working out the final details with Penn State."
Golden is slated to replace Bill O'Brien, who resigned last week to jump to the NFL and take the Houston Texans coaching job. O'Brien spent two seasons in Happy Valley as Paterno's replacement following the Jerry Sandusky child-abuse scandal.
During his tenure, the Nittany Lions were 15-9, including a 7-5 finish in his second season. O'Brien also previously coached under Bill Belichick in New England as Tom Brady's quarterbacks coach.
