Mack Brown was forced out as Texas coach after university president Bill Powers decided the Longhorns needed to move in a different direction.
Statesman.com reports Brown was set to remain on in the job he has held for the last 16 seasons when men's athletic director Steve Patterson informed him now was the time to walk away.
When pressed on the matter on Monday, Brown declined to comment and university director of media relations later added "all of these questions and issues were addressed publicly at last week's news conference."
On the same day Brown had decided to stay on as coach, the newspaper reports Brown received a call from Patterson where his tone had completely changed and he informed the coach "I've got to come over."
The Statesman adds the more developments go against everything Brown, Powers and Patterson have previously told the media, including at a Dec. 15 news conference where Brown said it was his decision to step down because "it's what's best for Texas."
UT finished the regular season with an 8-4 record and will face No. 10 Oregon (10-2) in the Alamo Bowl on Monday that will mark the end of Brown's tenure, which brought two national championships.
