The front office of the New Orleans Pelicans recently received a significant announcement, but that doesn't necessarily mean Zion Williamson is trading places, at least not right now.
New Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars spoke to mounting speculation surrounding the long-term future of the most divisive star on the franchise's roster, and he made one thing abundantly clear: there is no mandate to trade Zion.
Joe Dumars Dispels Trade Rumors Involving Zion Williamson
In a press conference on Tuesday, Dumars outrightly rejected that his coming with him had any pressure to sell Williamson.
"No edicts," Dumars said. "None whatsoever. I read that last week, that I had a mandate. I was just like, if I had, no one has called me and told me that."
Instead, Dumars said team owner Gayle Benson had only one wish: to finally experience what it's like to win an NBA championship. That, he stressed, is his real priority, not reshuffling the roster right away.

Zion Williamson's Uncertain Future in New Orleans
Even with Dumars' reassurance, Zion's future with the Pelicans is very uncertain. The No. 1 overall pick from the 2019 NBA Draft has suffered through numerous setbacks, playing over 30 games in just two of his six seasons. Though he has exhibited moments of brilliance, posting 24.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game, his chronic absences have become a serious concern.
Recent NBA insider reports from Marc Stein and Jake Fischer indicate there's "organizational exasperation" with the 24-year-old star. Sources indicate Dumars is eager to thoroughly assess the roster before committing to any significant changes, yet there's increasing doubt surrounding Williamson's long-term status in New Orleans.
Pelicans Will Change Direction if They Pick Cooper Flagg
A lot of uncertainty rests on the upcoming NBA Draft. If the Pelicans get their much-desired No. 1 pick, they'd be able to draft Duke sensation Cooper Flagg, a budding sensation who could become Williamson's replacement as the franchise star, Bleacher Report wrote.
This situation adds extra pressure on Zion, particularly since fans and observers in the league question if New Orleans is ready to construct around him or gear up for something new.
Meanwhile, Dumars is prioritizing building relationships and analyzing the team from top to bottom. He emphasized that there is no hurry to make hasty decisions before he has an opportunity to look at the situation.
