San Jose Sharks legend Logan Couture, one of the greatest players in franchise history, is walking away from professional hockey after a long and agonizing fight with a pelvic injury.

The 36-year-old captain will likely make the news official at a press conference later today. While he's not officially retiring, Couture's playing career is essentially over as he's going to be put on long-term injured reserve (LTIR).

Couture's Career Cut Short by Osteitis Pubis

As reported by Daily Faceoff, Couture has been sidelined by osteitis pubis, a chronic inflammation where the pubic bones meet. This condition commonly affects athletes and causes significant groin and lower abdominal pain, symptoms that have plagued Couture for the past two seasons.

He missed the entirety of the current NHL season and was limited to just six games last year due to the debilitating nature of the injury.

Osteitis pubis is usually caused by stress and overuse in the pelvis, particularly in sports with sudden stops and physical contact, two of the staples of professional hockey, writes the Cleveland Clinic.

A Shark for Life: 15 Seasons of Commitment

Logan Couture played his entire 15-year NHL career with the San Jose Sharks, something that is not often seen in an era of ongoing player movement. Taken ninth overall in the 2007 NHL Draft, Couture played in 933 regular-season games, establishing himself as a mainstay of the franchise. In 2019, he was appointed team captain—a position he took on both on and off the ice.

Couture's leadership, resilience, and knack for rising to the occasion earned him a cult following and admirer status league-wide. His reliability, particularly in the postseason, brought him into the elite ranks.

A Playoff Performer Unmatched

Couture's playoff performances are remembered in Sharks lore. He appeared in 116 Stanley Cup Playoff games, scoring 48 goals and ranking as one of the most prolific playoff goal-scorers in the NHL. His highlight was in 2016 when he assisted in taking San Jose to its first-ever Stanley Cup Finals appearance.

Even though they eventually lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins, Couture's dominance during that playoff series was not in doubt. His performance generated hope and national recognition for the Sharks franchise.

More Than Just Hockey: The Off-Ice Legacy

Couture's name also hit the headlines off the ice. In 2016, the Canadian forward alleged he was "sucker punched" in Toronto after he commented on then-U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Whether it was his toughness through injury, clutch plays, or his fearless personality, Logan Couture left his mark wherever he went.

Is Couture Retiring Soon?

TMZ Sports reports that Couture did not say that he's retiring, but his departure due to injury closes the book on an unforgettable chapter of San Jose history. His work on the ice, his locker room leadership, and his connection with Sharks fans will be remembered for years to come.
