More than a year after former NFL cornerback Vontae Davis has been found dead, the cause of his passing remains a mystery to many.
In a recent autopsy report, the Broward County Medical Examiner has specifically declared the cause and manner of Davis' death to be "undetermined."
Drugs in the System, But Still No Cause of Death Uncertain
The former NFL star was found dead on his home's gym floor in Southwest Ranches, Florida, on April 1, 2024, by his assistant. Even after a comprehensive 11-page autopsy and toxicology report, forensic investigators claim to be unable to determine how or why Davis died, according to TMZ Sports.
Toxicology reports indicated the presence of methamphetamines, cannabinoids, and MDMA (ecstasy) in Davis' system at the time of death. The report also mentioned "suspected drug paraphernalia" found in his room, such as capsules containing white and tan powder, further indicating known drug use.
Though the presence of these drugs left questions, the medical examiner explained that the autopsy and scene findings were "inconsistent" with one another. Hence, it was impossible to connect the substances to his cause of death. Thus, the case remains technically unsolved.

Scene Description Raises More Questions Than Answers
When Davis' body was found, there was an unidentified dark substance noted on the bench within his sauna.
In addition to these off-beat particulars, no mention was made within the report regarding any signs of foul play or physical trauma. As a result, investigators have very little on which to operate.
A Career Marked by Talent and Trauma
Vontae Davis was not unfamiliar with the physical wear and tear of the sport. As a top-tier cornerback who played for the Miami Dolphins, Indianapolis Colts, and Buffalo Bills during his 10-year NFL stint, Davis carried a well-documented history of head injuries, a widespread affliction in pro football.
Though the autopsy fails to connect his death to CTE or any particular neurological illness, long-term head trauma continues to be a silent killer that cannot be avoided.
Before his 2018 retirement, infamously walking off the field during a game, Davis accumulated 22 interceptions, 4 forced fumbles, 2 sacks, and 1 touchdown, picking up two Pro Bowl nods in the process.
According to ESPN, Vontae is the younger brother of former Pro Bowl tight end Vernon Davis.
