The Atlanta Braves were dealt a huge blow as experienced outfielder Jurickson Profar has been suspended for 80 games. He tested positive for chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a performance-enhancing banned substance.
This is in the wake of the Braves' struggling start to the season and the spate of injuries on their roster, forcing them to look for quick fixes.
Profar Tests Positive for PEDs
Profar's suspension, which started with the Braves' series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, will keep him sidelined until June 29. As part of Major League Baseball's joint drug prevention and treatment program, he is also not eligible for the 2025 postseason.
HCG is a hormone that supports testosterone production, according to the Cleveland Clinic, which resulted in his positive test.
Although "extremely disappointed and surprised" about MLB's decision, the Braves organization said, "We fully support the program and are hopeful that Jurickson will learn from this experience."
Toughest Day of His Profar's Baseball Career
Profar, who was in shock, termed Monday "the toughest day of my baseball career." He claimed he had been tested eight times in his breakout 2024 season without any problems.
Profar indicated that the positive test was for a test he took during the offseason. The Curaçaon outfielder added that he would never "knowingly do anything to cheat this game." He apologized for what he had done later on.
Braves Acquire Stuart Fairchild as a Quick Fix
To replace Profar, the Braves obtained outfielder Stuart Fairchild from the Cincinnati Reds for cash considerations, according to ESPN. Fairchild was meant to arrive in Los Angeles but was absent for the series opener, reducing the Braves to one player short.
The Braves' issues don't stop at Profar's suspension. Starting pitcher Reynaldo Lopez was also placed on the injured list for shoulder inflammation, adding to the negative. Lopez's loss puts Bryce Elder on the mound on Wednesday, as the Braves attempt to remain competitive.
Meanwhile, Braves manager Brian Snitker acknowledged the unfortunate situation. He said that they hated MLB's decision for their team and club, but they needed to honor the verdict.
