Even though the Phoenix Suns retained Kevin Durant beyond the trade deadline, rumors surrounding his future just won't subside. As the offseason comes, there are reports that his next step may hinge on two factors.
Will Durant Sign a Contract Extension?
ESPN's Bobby Marks broke the news that any possible trade for Durant is dependent on whether he will sign a two-year, $122 million contract extension with his new franchise.
The NBA insider clarified that it's not likely that any franchise would trade quality draft picks and players for a one-year rental, even for a player of Durant's stature.
This translates to if Durant does make a move, it will probably be to a franchise willing to commit long-term to him. His desire for control over the last chapter of his career is a large part of these negotiations.
"I want my career to end on my terms, that's the only thing," Durant said on "The Draymond Green Show with Baron Davis" interview last month. "That's the only thing I'm worried about. 'Cause I see a lot of dudes that don't get that opportunity, so I want to keep putting in that work to make that choice on my own."
Does Durant Desire a Title-Contending Team?
The second biggest factor is whether Durant's next team will be a true championship contender. At 35, the two-time NBA champion wants another ring chance, and if the Suns don't appear to be contenders, a move may be unavoidable.
ESPN's Shams Charania wrote that the Phoenix Suns and Durant will probably "work together on any potential trade to a contender" if a deal occurs. This would provide Durant with some say in his next destination while enabling Phoenix to get the best return.
Suns' Struggles Fuel Trade Talks
Durant's trade rumors are the result of the Suns' disappointing season. The team, despite having a talent-laden trio of Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal, finds itself at 29-33 and 2.5 games out of the final Western Conference play-in position, Bleacher Report writes.
The Suns were supposed to be a force, but injuries, uneven play, and chemistry problems have haunted them. If they don't get their act together, Durant might seek a new destination where he can pursue another title.
No Return to Golden State
Before the trade deadline, rumors flew regarding a possible reunion between Durant and the Golden State Warriors. But Durant was adamant that he had no desire to return to his previous team. The Warriors junked the Durant trade and tested the waters with Butler.
