Luka Doncic donning a Los Angeles Lakers jersey is something that not everyone expects to see. The blockbuster trade sent Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a 2029 first-round draft pick to the Dallas Mavericks for the Slovenian guard, Maxi Kleber, and Markieff Morris.
Although most have deemed the Dallas Mavericks the losers of the exchange, former professional NBA player Carlos Boozer does not agree as he feels the two teams each made the proper decision.
Did Lakers Secure Their Future With Luka Doncic?
LeBron James has a new co-star in Luka Doncic, a 25-year-old superstar who can be an MVP. According to most fans, the Lakers made a genius decision by making sure their franchise is still competitive even when LeBron retires.
In an interview with USA Today, Lakers GM Rob Pelinka was praised by Carlos Boozer for pulling off the trade, stating that it was a game-changing trade.
"First thing I did was text Rob Pelinka and say, 'Man, great job,'" Boozer told the publication. "To set up the Lakers for post-LeBron life, acquiring Luka, one of the best two or three players in the world, is a genius move."
Doncic, who guided the Mavericks to the NBA Finals last season, should flourish in the Los Angeles spotlight. With LeBron as a mentor, the adjustment might be effortless.
Mavericks Risk It All With Injury-Prone Anthony Davis
Conversely, the Mavericks are risking it all with a bet on Anthony Davis. The 30-year-old center is an unstoppable force when on the court but has not been healthy throughout his playing career.
Boozer believes, though, that there is something there in the Mavericks' revamped roster. Boozer, who became popular during his Chicago Bulls stint in 2010 said that Dallas got an "unbelievable" lineup when Davis comes back.
The former Lakers forward also thought that Kyrie Irving was incredible, and Dallas could work more on Klay Thompson's redemption. He also believed that Mavs' bigs were made to win right now.
Speaking of Irving, the veteran guard said that he plans to play in Team Australia for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Unfortunately for Dallas, Davis injured himself in his first game and will likely be out for an extended period. This was disappointing news and brings into question whether the Mavericks really enhanced their prospects of making a title run.
Did the Lakers or Mavericks Win the Trade?
While fans and commentators are still divided on the trade, Boozer says that both sides did what they wanted, Sports Illustrated reports.
"I think both teams definitely won," Boozer added. "The Lakers positioned themselves for the future, and Dallas stepped up to win now."
Metta World Peace is also on the same page as Boozer. The one-time NBA champion said that the Mavericks did not lose the trade since it was a win-win for both teams.
