The Milwaukee Bucks are clearly struggling with their four straight losses. The glaring double-digit beatdowns are not what the management expects to see from the thriving team. However, things might change if the Kyle Kuzma-Khris Middleton trade pushes through.
Sources familiar with the deal said that the wing swap is "getting close" to happening. This could benefit both of the franchises in the long run, but how?
Salary Swap That Makes Sense
According to Clutch Points, the Bucks are not the only struggling team at the moment. Even the Wizards, which is at the center of the trade rumors, is performing worse with their 8-41 card. This is why a quick swap scenario is possible to get the best of both worlds.
Both the Bucks and Wizards have onerous contracts, but a trade may just be their best chance to escape. Middleton, a three-time All-Star, has struggled with injuries and has played only 23 games this season.
He is set to earn $31.6 million next season and is likely to opt into his $34 million player option for 2025-26.
Kuzma, meanwhile, is locked in a four-year, $90 million contract and saw his production plummet this season. While he was averaging 22.2 points per game on 46.3% shooting last year, he's scoring just 15.2, rebounding for 5.8, and shooting just 28% from three-point range.
Although Kuzma shoots effectively at 51.2% from the field and 40.7% from beyond the arc, durability remains the primary issue here.
If Milwaukee wants a more agile and varied wing who would play off both Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard, then the Los Angeles native is definitely up for consideration.
Will Kuzma Fit into Milwaukee?
There are younger wings in the league, but Kuzma is still young at 29. He still has a lot of time to rediscover or retool his playstyle.
Playing alongside two superstars like Giannis and Lillard can help him regain confidence. A change of scenery might be just what he needs to break out of his slump and contribute to a contender.
For the Wizards, letting go of Kuzma might just be the future asset. Though they are not going to get the type of trade return they had initially envisioned, acquiring Middleton, whose contract expires a year earlier than Kuzma's, might help them gain financial flexibility in the long run.
Also, Cody and Caleb Martin are in the mix of the rumor mill, according to MSN, since the Bucks need some defensive guards in the perimeter.
Trade Deadline Move That Benefits Both Sides
Each of the two teams lacks an apparent approach to the future; however, in Middleton for Kuzma, the Bucks can advance their needs and those of the Washington Wizards.
Milwaukee might be looking to retool its roster to better support its championship aspirations, while Washington is focused on a long-term rebuild.
A trade deadline is only one sleep away from now. Chances are the Kuzma-Middleton swap could turn things around for the better. If it's not feasible, the Jusuf Nurkic-Jonas Valanciunas trade could be the closest to reality.
