The Phoenix Suns are making bold strides to acquire Miami Heat All-Star Jimmy Butler before the trade deadline, according to the latest rumor.
A recent trade with the Utah Jazz has equipped the Suns with additional first-round picks, hinting that a deal for the Heat star is imminent.
Suns Secure Key Draft Picks to Bolster Trade Package
The Phoenix Suns have just closed a trade with the Utah Jazz, acquiring three first-round picks in 2025, 2027, and 2029. To get those three picks, the Suns sent an unprotected 2031 first-round pick to Utah. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, the Suns will receive the least favorable of Cleveland, Minnesota, and Utah's first-round selections in the designated years.
This strategy strengthens the draft capital of Phoenix, placing the team on top in its pursuit of acquiring Butler. Suns owner Mat Ishbia's indication that the team will make extensive changes to the roster only goes to show that the team is dead set on securing the Miami Heat superstar.
Jimmy Butler Trade: The Phoenix Suns His First Preference
Jimmy Butler has said publicly he wants out of Miami and, more recently, "tripling down" on his trade request from earlier in the month. ESPN's Brian Windhorst reports that Butler's preferred destination is Phoenix.
"Jimmy's No. 1 focus is getting traded, preferably, to the Phoenix Suns. Everything else is secondary," Windhorst explained.
It has even become more obvious that an upcoming Butler trade could happen after the Miami forward wore Phoenix Suns-themed shoes after the Heat bowed to The Valley on Tuesday, Jan. 22.
The Suns are using their leverage in the assets they have to make this happen and Butler's expressed interest means the case gets significantly more serious.
A Possible Four-Team Blockbuster
According to The Playoffs, the four-team trade will be the way to go to allow Butler out of town into Phoenix. From Forbes' Evan Sidery, the deal in sight would be:
- Phoenix Suns: Get Jimmy Butler.
- Milwaukee Bucks: Get Bradley Beal from Phoenix.
- Miami Heat: Get Khris Middleton from Milwaukee.
Suns star Bradley Beal has reportedly expressed a willingness to waive his no-trade clause to join the Bucks, which aligns with this potential trade framework. With all parties seemingly on board, the deal could materialize as the February 6 trade deadline approaches.
Suns Are Likely the Winners in the Trade
Acquiring Jimmy Butler would solidify the Suns as a legitimate championship contender. Known for his tenacity, defensive prowess, and ability to perform in clutch moments, Butler would bring a winning mentality to Phoenix.
Paired with Devin Booker and Kevin Durant, Butler's arrival would create one of the most formidable trios in the NBA.
