Ryan Clark, former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back, recently weighed in on the future of head coach Mike Tomlin. The criticism over eight seasons without a playoff win has certainly taken its toll, but Clark doesn't think it's time for the Steelers to let go of Tomlin.
Maybe he needs a different situation to launch a second chapter as Andy Reid and the Kansas City Chiefs did.
What Ryan Clark Thinks About Mike Tomlin's Future
Clark, now a sports commentator, has a unique perspective on his former coach. He argues that while Tomlin's time in Pittsburgh may be nearing an end, a fresh start at another franchise could reignite his coaching career in the same way it did for Reid.
"Coach Tomlin should look into whether or not his voice is better suited somewhere else," Clark told TMZ Sports. "Whether or not the cache that he will carry from what he's done in Pittsburgh will help another locker room more than it's helping the locker room in Pittsburgh."
"Andy Reid's voice seemed to have lost a little steam in Philadelphia, but it was picked up in Kansas City," Clark added. "I believe that can be an answer for Mike Tomlin."
This comparison comes from the understanding that sometimes, a new setting can revive the energy of a coach, along with a resurgent performance.
Andy Reid left Philadelphia for Kansas City, which was seen as a career resurgence. He helped lead the Chiefs into the regular-season play for multiple years, culminating in a Super Bowl win.
Clark thinks that could happen to Tomlin, too.
Why the Steelers Shouldn't Fire Mike Tomlin Just Yet
Despite the lack of playoff victories in recent seasons, Ryan Clark is adamant that Pittsburgh should not part ways with Tomlin. He thinks Tomlin is still a capable coach.
The Steelers, under Tomlin, have maintained a level of competitiveness that many teams would envy. Though they haven't clinched a Super Bowl win since 2008, Tomlin has kept the Steelers in playoff contention for most of his tenure.
Fans and analysts have discussed the fact that Tomlin must be fired, especially after the Steelers' lack of substantial playoff runs in the last few seasons. When pines that, however, the pedigree and experience Tomlin brings to the table are enough for him to do a turnaround in another environment that could unlock his hidden potential once more.
Coaching Changes Across the NFL: Deion Sanders and Bill Belichick Speculations
Beyond Tomlin's future, Clark also discussed other NFL coaching changes. He discussed the Dallas Cowboys' potential head coach vacancy and suggested that Deion Sanders would be a strong fit for that role.
Clark's excitement about Sanders, who has been so successful at the college level with Jackson State, speaks to his belief that fresh perspectives bring new life to struggling franchises.
As for legendary coach Bill Belichick, Clark believes the New England Patriots head coach could eventually make a move but is skeptical that Belichick will leave soon.
With the Patriots currently in a rebuilding phase, many wonder if Belichick's tenure in New England is ending.
