The police are investigating an intriguing case, with a thumb drive said to contain a recording of O.J. Simpson confessing to the brutal 1994 murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.

But here's the twist: the thumb drive was reportedly found by Bloomington Police in a separate case tied to Simpson's former bodyguard, Iroc Avelli.

The Thumb Drive: A New Lead in a Cold Case?

In June 2024, only two months after O.J. Simpson's death, authorities in Minnesota received startling news. According to TMZ Sports, LAPD had informed Bloomington Police of a potential breakthrough in the infamous murder case: a thumb drive containing a recording of Simpson allegedly confessing to the double homicide.

Supposedly, the thumb drive was recovered as part of a heap of evidence from a backpack that had Iroc Avelli. This particular individual had been under arrest for other charges as of March 2022.

Is this new evidence, then enough to crack open the case and help solve it once and for all?

How Did the Thumb Drive End Up in Police Custody?

The thumb drive was found when Bloomington Police executed a search warrant on Avelli's backpack, which also contained live ammunition and other items.

According to the new search warrant obtained by TMZ, Avelli and his attorney informed LAPD that the thumb drive could hold explosive content—a recording of Simpson admitting to the murders, as well as implicating another individual in the crime. But the contents of the thumb drive, to this date, remain undisclosed since it is tied up in an ongoing case.

Avelli sued the police in Minnesota for having his confiscated properties returned.

What's in the Thumb Drive?

The mystery behind the thumb drive grows. While law enforcement sources have confirmed that no confession has been made public, the legal documents indicate that authorities are still investigating the contents of the drive.

As of now, it's unclear whether the recording truly exists, or if it's just a rumor sparked by Avelli and his legal team. Moreover, the LAPD declared that they had not listened to or accessed the contents of the thumb drive, leaving all those questions unanswered.

O.J. Simpson: The Legal Aftermath

O.J. Simpson was famously accused in 1994 of the murders of his ex-wife Nicole and her friend Ron Goldman, but he was found not guilty in what became infamous as the "Trial of the Century." However, in a civil court later, Simpson was found liable for their murders.

Over the passage of time, the murder case has continued to remain a talk of mystery since Simpson has never been able to accept that he was indeed guilty on criminal trial.

Malcolm LaVergne, Simpson's attorney for nearly two decades, says LAPD has closed the case, assuming Simpson's guilty, but admitting he was acquitted. LaVergne is currently trying to get key evidence into an auction to pay off Simpson's debts, but the thumb drive, if it indeed holds a confession, maybe the greatest discovery of all.

For now, the thumb drive remains in the custody of Bloomington PD, and further investigation continues. With a judge's denial of the motion filed to return the seized items, there is still no scheduled date for when the items will be returned.

Could it be that this thumb drive is just the missing piece of the jigsaw puzzle that solves the most famous murder case in history? Only time can tell. But with new evidence looming on the horizon, perhaps that case everyone has been so fixated on all those years may not be closed, after all.
