An Alabama high school football player has died after suffering a severe brain concussion during his school's season opener on Friday.

Caden Tellier, 16, was rushed to the hospital after a severe head injury that left him in critical condition during John T. Morgan Academy's game against Southern Academy in Selma, Alabama, last week.

In the third quarter of the match, the junior quarterback received a blow to the head and had to be airlifted to the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital, the New York Post reported. Details about his injury were not revealed.

On Saturday, Morgan Academy headmaster Bryan Oliver released a statement confirming the death of the teen. In a Facebook post, Oliver extended his sympathies to the Tellier family and called the student a "shining light."

"It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you that Caden Tellier has gone to be with this Lord and Savior ... He was a student, a friend, an athlete and most important, a Christ follower," the statement read.

Caden's parents also released a statement, sharing their grief at the death of their son. The couple also asked for prayers "for the hard days ahead" and said arrangements for a funeral service are being made.

The Alabama Independent School Association announced that Morgan Academy has decided to suspend all school activities this week in light of the recent tragedy.

The Post noted that Tellier was an athletic teen, playing both football and baseball for Morgan Academy. In his first year as a starter, he scored seven touchdowns and four interceptions in eight games. As a hitter, he had two home runs and 10 RBIs.

Second Alabama high school football player's death in days

Tellier is the second high school footballer from Alabama who died in 10 days.

On August 15, New Brockton High School freshman Semaj Wilkins collapsed during practice as temperatures in the area hit 96 degrees, Fox News reported.

CPR was administered to Wilkins before he was transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy is being conducted as Coffee County Coroner Arnold Woodham said an underlying medical issue is not being dismissed as a reason for the death.

New Brockton High School hosted a vigil days after the unfortunate tragedy to remember Wilkins.
