The Boston Celtics could receive backing from one of the world's wealthiest men.

Speculations have arisen that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos could place a bid for the Celtics after Boston Basketball Partners, the investment group that owns the team, announced plans to sell a majority stake this year or early 2025, and to sell off all shares of the team by 2028.

A few days after the announcement, Bezos has made a move to sell $5 billion worth of Amazon stock.

While nothing is confirmed yet, the amount is roughly in line with the valuation of the team at $4.7 billion by Forbes in their latest estimate.

Bezos is currently ranked as the second-richest person in the world by both Forbes and Bloomberg Billionaires Index in their real-time valuations as of July 4, just behind Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Jeff Bezos' interest in the NBA

Bezos has previously expressed interest in owning an NBA team, being one of the candidates who considered buying the Phoenix Suns when it was put up for sale in 2022.

The team eventually went to mortgage lender United Wholesale Mortgage CEO Mat Ishbia for an NBA record sale price of $4 billion.

The Celtics' final sale price is expected to surpass this number, given their rich lore and status as the winningest team in the league, potentially exceeding the $5 billion mark.

Bezos previously made a failed bid for the NFL's Washington Commanders back in 2022.
