The Golden State Warriors are set to lose a legendary franchise player. Shooting guard Klay Thompson will officially depart from the team.

Thompson has agreed to a three-year contract worth $50 million with the Dallas Mavericks in free agency, concluding his 13-year tenure in the Bay Area.

Despite the 34-year-old departing via free agency, the Warriors will receive compensation for his departure through a sign-and-trade transaction.

As part of the deal, the Dubs will acquire two second-round draft picks: Dallas' 2031 second-round pick and the less favorable of the Denver Nuggets' or Philadelphia 76ers' 2025 second-round pick.

Due to the transaction, Golden State has gained a trade exception worth around $16 million for their upcoming moves this offseason.

The Mavericks executed the sign-and-trade to offload assets and make room for the acquisition of the sharpshooter. They also traded away shooting guard Josh Green to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for two second-round picks.

Klay Thompson's reasons for joining the Dallas Mavericks

The five-time NBA All-Star received offers with more money and longer lengths from various teams, but he chose the Mavericks for multiple reasons.

The 6-foot-6 player taking less money was due to the opportunity to pursue a fifth NBA championship with the Mavs, especially after their recent appearance in the 2024 NBA Finals with stars Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving.

Texas' more favorable tax laws, including no state income tax, also influenced Thompson's decision.
