Lots of NBA fans are on Lebron James' case after the Los Angeles Lakers drafted his son Bronny James as the 55th overall pick in the NBA 2024 draft.
They decry nepotism and believe the selection could have been made on a much better and deserving player.
This selection quickly got compared to the case of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Thanasis with the Milwaukee Bucks.
The Greek brothers have been together at the Bucks for five years now, and many think this is only possible because of the Greek Freak's great contribution to the franchise.
Are these two cases the same? Hardly!
Unlike the James father and son duo situation, Thanasis came to the league on merit.
The older Thanasis came to the league in 2014 as a 51st overall pick. Giannis was only in his second season and was still far from becoming a household name.
This means that he had no say in helping Thanasis enter the league. It is like saying Jeff Teague had a role in getting Marquis a roster spot.
The exact opposite is the situation for the James duo.
The best way to put the Antetokounmpo nepotism is that Giannis did not assist in helping Thanasis earn a spot in the league, but he is valuable in his brother's lengthened stay in the NBA.
Nepotism in the NBA is rampant
NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski said it best when he claimed that nepotism is not new in the league.
It is seen in many teams' front offices and the coaching staff.
"I don't want to hear the charges, people talking about nepotism," he said.
"The NBA is full of nepotism. The ownership level, front offices, coaching. I don't want to hear about it all of a sudden because Bronny James' father plays for the Lakers. It is rampant in this league."
Bronny's task now is to work hard to make an impact and stay longer. That's where he could beat Thanasis.
