Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla enjoyed receiving advice from arguably the best coach from a different sport during the 2024 NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks.
Mazzulla revealed that Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, who attended Game 1 at TD Garden on June 6, offered him tips on his game plan.
"Dallas' defense, they're one of the smartest, best defensive teams in the league... That's kind of what Pep has helped me with, spacing. It's very important. Transitions, how you move those guys," the 35-year-old revealed.
The 53-year-old tactician was also on the TD Garden floor the day before Game 1 during team practice, where he was seen discussing strategy with Mazzulla.
Joe Mazzulla made midseason trip to watch Manchester City
Mazzulla flew to England during the NBA All-Star break in February 2024 to attend and observe a Manchester City team practice.
He openly admitted that he studied Manchester City extensively and declared Guardiola the best coach in the world at any sport.
"You start to realize, once you're in a position, nobody can really relate to you other than people in those positions," Mazzulla said about his friendship with the Spanish coach.
"So, you develop a bond with other coaches, and you know what they are going through, and you know what the challenges are and the opportunities and the situation you're in."
