The New York Knicks are fresh off their most successful season in over a decade, finishing as the second seed in the Eastern Conference.
The major move that catapulted them to their deep playoff run was the midseason acquisition of forward OG Anunoby from the Toronto Raptors.
However, the 26-year-old was in the last guaranteed year of his contract in 2023-24, and he only has a player option for the 2024-25 season.
The Knicks are now trying to retain the British star by offering a new contract, but their initial offer has not impressed the player.
"Most people believe Anunoby will stay with New York, but there have been indications he may want to test the market because he's not thrilled with what the Knicks are offering," ESPN reporter Brian Windhorst said on the morning show "Get Up."
Anunoby earned $18.6 million in 2023-24, while his player option for 2024-25 is worth $19.92 million.
OG Anunoby's projected contract
Anunoby is expected to command lucrative offers in the free agency market.
According to Michael A. Scotto of HoopsHype, the 2021-22 NBA steals leader's floor appears to be $35 million per year, with his ceiling being a max contract.
However, securing a max contract could be tough for Anunoby due to his shaky injury history.
