NBA Commissioner Adam Silver made a striking acknowledgment regarding the future of NBA All-Star Weekends, which has been marked by a lack of competitiveness and entertainment in recent years.
During an appearance on ESPN's NBA Countdown, Silver suggested that a hypothetical USA vs. International game concept may not enhance the event.
"My concern about U.S. vs. International is that we may be just past the point where guys and teams are incentivized to play a competitive All-Star game in the middle of the season," the 62-year-old said ahead of Game 3 of the 2024 NBA Finals on Wednesday, June 12.
Fans heavily criticized the most recent edition of the exhibition game held in Indianapolis last February for its lack of competitiveness, as the East All-Stars defeated the West All-Stars 211-186.
It was a record-setting game with the highest points ever scored by a team, the first instance of a team surpassing 200 points, and a record total of 67 three-pointers.
Adam Silver offers a solution for the NBA All-Star Weekend
Despite the disappointment of the exhibition game, the NBA vs WNBA shootout event, featuring Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry and New York Liberty's Sabrina Ionescu, served as a bright spot for the weekend.
Silver hinted that similar types of events may be hosted in the future.
"Maybe we need to play basketball, but we have to do something that's a little bit different, frankly, that this is about entertainment. That people want to see the players put their best foot forward, but it has to be something more than just a game."
