Miami Heat legend Alonzo Mourning recently revealed that he battled and overcame prostate cancer earlier this year.
The 54-year-old opened up about his journey with the disease in an interview with ESPN league insider Adrian Wojnarowski.
Mourning recalled that he was diagnosed with Stage 3 prostate cancer after a biopsy last February, and fortunately, it hasn't spread in his body.
"I was in shock. I can't tell you enough about how well my body felt. I was in top-notch shape, running sprints, strong. The doctor told me that he couldn't believe I had had a kidney transplant," the 1999 NBA All-Star shared.
Mourning nearly retired in 2003 due to a life-threatening kidney disease, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, before an estranged cousin who was a match donated his kidney to the star center.
Alonzo Mourning gives important advice for men
The two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year emphasized that the only way to determine if one has prostate cancer is to undergo blood testing and PSA checks.
"What scares me about this disease is that there are so many men walking around feeling great and have that cancer in them and they don't know it," the seven-time NBA All-Star added.
The 2006 NBA champion also highlighted that there are 3.3 million men in the U.S. living with prostate cancer, and many of them are unaware of their condition.
