The Detroit Pistons are set to introduce a new figure to guide their basketball operations following a disastrous 2023-24 season.
The team is in the final stages of securing a deal with Trajan Langdon to assume the President of Basketball Operations role.
Langdon has been serving as the general manager of the New Orleans Pelicans since May 2019.
In the 2023-24 season, the Pistons finished with a franchise-worst record of 14-68, also the worst record in the entire league for that campaign.
This included an NBA record of 28 consecutive losses, the most in a row in a single season.
The 48-year-old Langdon previously worked as a scout for the San Antonio Spurs from 2012 to 2015 and as an assistant general manager for the Brooklyn Nets from 2016 to 2019.
Pistons willing to make bold move if Langdon wants it
While Pistons general manager Troy Weaver will remain in his role, Langdon will assume the lead position and have the final say in making major basketball decisions as President of Basketball Operations. This role has been vacant for the Pistons since 2018.
Langdon will be given authority to decide the future of both Weaver and head coach Monty Williams in their roles.
Pistons owner Tom Gores is reportedly willing to absorb the costs of firing Williams, who signed a five-year, $76 million contract last summer, the largest NBA coaching contract at the time, if Langdon deems it the right choice.
