FC Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez is on the hot seat once again.
The Spanish manager's comments during a press conference ahead of their La Liga match against Almeria on Thursday, May 16, have reportedly infuriated club president Joan Laporta and members of the Barcelona board.
Xavi spoke to the media, stating that the club's dire financial situation has hindered their ability to acquire talent but assured that they will compete at the highest level.
"The situation is difficult economically that has nothing to do with what used to happen 25 years ago, when the coach came and said 'I love this one, this one and this one'. It doesn't work like that anymore. I understand what's happening and that's how we're going to manage," the Barcelona coach said in Spanish.
Reports soon emerged that Xavi's job is in jeopardy, and his continuity for next season is uncertain. The next few days will be crucial in understanding the rest of the situation.
Xavi Hernandez just made a stunning U-turn from Barcelona exit
Xavi previously announced his intention to step down as the club's manager after the 2023-24 season in late January following a poor run of results.
However, Laporta and the board spent the following months trying to convince Xavi to reverse his decision, holding several meetings and offering reassurances about the club's future plans. They found it difficult to find a suitable replacement for him, which further emphasized their desire to keep Xavi at the helm.
After the club's performance improved, it was announced that the 44-year-old would continue as Barcelona's coach in late April.
