The San Antonio Spurs are actively seeking a point guard/lead ball handler to complement their star, Victor Wembanyama, for the upcoming season.
Atlanta Hawks star Trae Young has surfaced as a potential candidate for this role, with rumors circulating about the Spurs' interest throughout the season.
However, the Spurs' likelihood of pursuing Young is low, as they do not perceive him as a compatible fit with Wembanyama moving forward.
Instead, they may show more interest in the Hawks' star guard, Dejounte Murray, if he becomes available.
Another report suggests that the Spurs might be deterred by the high cost of acquiring Young, particularly given that they would also need to commit to re-signing him to a maximum contract in 2026 to make the trade worth it.
Spurs prefer to acquire Hall-of-Fame point guard
The Spurs could emerge as a candidate to pursue Golden State Warriors point guard Chris Paul to provide more veteran support to Wembanyama in his sophomore season.
While the Spurs prioritize finding a long-term complement for Wembanyama and their other young talent, having Paul as a veteran mentor is also an intriguing possibility.
The 38-year-old point guard performed reasonably well with Golden State in the 2023-24 season, but financial considerations could be the primary reason for the Bay Area team to let go of the NBA 75th Anniversary member this offseason.
