The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired a star pitcher who played a crucial role on the Texas Rangers team that defeated them in the 2023 World Series at the end of last season.
The team will be signing left-handed starter Jordan Montgomery, reaching an agreement in free agency with a few days left before the start of the regular season proper.
The agreement between the two sides is a one-year contract worth $25 million, featuring a vesting option for 2025.
This vesting option represents an additional year after the contract, which becomes guaranteed, provided the player achieves specific performance incentives.
Montgomery's option for 2025 can become guaranteed if he makes a minimum of 10 starts during the 2024 season.
Jordan Montgomery played major role for the D-backs World Series nemesis
Last season, the 31-year-old played a significant role for the Texas Rangers, contributing to their victory over the Diamondbacks in the World Series, which concluded in five games. He joined the team at the trade deadline of that same season.
In the 2023 World Series, Montgomery pitched for six innings, allowing four runs on nine hits with one walk. Unfortunately, he was charged with the loss.
Although the Rangers would have ideally wanted to retain the 2023 All-MLB Second Team member, they could not meet the heightened financial demands for his re-signing, especially considering he earned only $10 million last season.
