The Dallas Mavericks have been providing special care for star player Kyrie Irving as he observes fasting during the annual Ramadan.
The yearly Islamic tradition began on Sunday, March 10, 2024, and is anticipated to conclude on Tuesday, April 9, 2024.
The Mavericks have arranged for a personal chef to fly in to prepare vegan meals for Irving, ensuring that he has his meals ready to eat once the sun goes down during Ramadan while continuing to play, as confirmed by the former Director of Basketball Development for the Dallas Mavericks Brian Dameris on 97.1 The Freak.
Irving previously announced his commitment to Islam and revealed that he has been fasting for Ramadan since 2021.
Irving has sustained his outstanding performance despite fasting, averaging 25.0 points, 7.0 assists, and 5.8 rebounds in five games since March 10, 2024.
Kyrie Irving shares significance of Ramadan
After their home game against the Denver Nuggets on Sunday, March 17, where he scored a remarkable left-handed floater buzzer-beater for the game-winning shot, Irving revealed the significance of Ramadan for him.
"Ramadan is a special month. It's a special time. It's just you try not to think about the suffering too much and really focus on the journey with God and the path that you're on. Just stay focused on that and stay disciplined. It's a difficult journey," the eight-time NBA All Star said.
Irving ended that game with 24 points, shooting 9-of-23 from the field. Additionally, he contributed seven rebounds and nine assists.
