Alpine have continued to wreak havoc on their own F1 team as they have shown no signs of improvement in the second Grand Prix of the season. Unfortunately, now heading into Australia, we don't think the bar can go much lower for the French Formula 1 Constructor.
If we told you the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix started in disaster for Alpine as soon as the out lap, you'd think we're lying. But in fact, at the start of the out lap Alpine driver Pierre Gasly began to suffer a gearbox issue. The French driver continued to line up on the grid hoping it wouldn't be too large of an issue, but ultimately ended up having to retire the car one lap into the race.
Putting Alpine Out of Their Own Misery
Gasly was only lining up 18th at the start of the race, so retiring the sluggish A524 in P20 wasn't too far off its actual pace. As a by-product of Ferrari's reserve driver Oliver Bearman performing well in his first ever debut in F1, Pierre Gasely now falls to 21st in the points table amongst 20 seats.
The other Alpine driver, Esteban Ocon, found himself in a rather frustrating position behind the masterful team work and defense from Haas' Kevin Magnussen. Magnussen was the conductor of the DRS train that held Ocon, Yuki Tsunoda, and Alexander Albon back as he gained time for his Haas teammate Nico Hulkenberg to snatch the last remaining championship point of the race.
