The San Francisco 49ers have officially signed veteran backup Joshua Dobbs to a one-year, fully guaranteed deal worth $2.25 million.

The contract also includes an extra $750,000 in potential play-time incentives, per league insider Adam Schefter of ESPN.

The 29-year-old is anticipated to step into the role of the 49ers' backup quarterback behind star Brock Prudy, taking over from Sam Darnold, who departed to join the Minnesota Vikings in free agency. Brandon Allen will retain the position of the No. 3 quarterback for the Niners.

Dobbs' deal with the 49ers was confirmed by his agent, Mike McCartney, on social media platform X, formerly Twitter, on Monday, March 18.

Primarily serving as a career backup throughout most of his professional career, Dobbs spent the 2023 season between the Arizona Cardinals and the Minnesota Vikings, providing relief after both teams suffered major injuries to their starters Kyler Murray and Kirk Cousins, respectively.

49ers is Joshua Dobbs' seventh stop in the NFL

The 49ers mark Dobbs' seventh NFL team, adding to his extensive experience across various franchises in the league.

Before joining San Francisco, Dobbs had tenures with the Pittsburgh Steelers (two stints), Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, Arizona Cardinals, and the Minnesota Vikings.

Additionally, he was included in the Detroit Lions' preseason squad leading up to the 2022 season.
