The Washington Commanders have traded quarterback Sam Howell to the Seattle Seahawks.
Seattle received Howell, a fourth-round draft pick (No. 102 overall) and a sixth-rounder (No. 179) in exchange for picks in the third (No. 78) and fifth (No. 152) rounds.
Sam Howell's time in D.C. was cut short when the franchise took him in the fifth round of the 2022 overall pick. He spent most of his time sitting behind Taylor Heinke and Carson Wentz before becoming a starter for the Commanders.
Howell's play with the Commanders was overall disappointing despite finishing the season throwing for 3,946 yards and 21 touchdowns. He led the league with 21 interceptions and was sacked a league-high 65 times, leading the Commanders to go in a different direction.
The team finished the season with a 4-13 record to clinch the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
What is Sam Howell's Place with the Seattle Seahawks
Sam Howell would likely play the role of backup to quarterback Geno Smith. Smith is fresh off the best two-year run of his career, during which he helped the Seahawks clinch a playoff berth in 2022 and led the team to a winning record of 9-8 in 2023.
Only time would tell if Sam Howell will get a chance to start again.
It's likely Howell could push Smith for the starting job. However, he is still young at 23 and gets to sit and learn behind a true veteran quarterback in Geno Smith, who has played for several franchises in his career.
Washington Commanders: New Feel in D.C.?
The Washington Commanders have made several changes this offseason. Hiring Dann Quinn as their new head coach after firing Ron Rivera and now moving on from Sam Howell already.
The franchise has undergone a total regime change. They hired Adam Peters as their general manager and recently have gone through an ownership change from Dan Synder to Josh Harris.
Washington Commanders: Who Will be Under Center in D.C.?
The Washington Commanders may be looking to take a QB in the upcoming NFL Draft. The franchise currently owns the No.2 overall pick and could trade up to guarantee getting Caleb Williams, who is the consensus number one overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.
Williams would be the team's franchise quarterback after a solid finish to his collegiate career at USC.
If the Commanders decide not to trade up, they can at least take from a pool of the best available quarterback. They will have their shot at the Heisman winner LSU Senior Jayden Daniels or North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye, who are also projected to go in the top ten.
The team signed Marcus Mariota this offseason, who would likely play backup or even be a veteran starter to whoever they draft.
