Today at 1:00 p.m. ET on Fox the trainwreck in Washington called the Redskins (3-10) will take on the injury-riddled Atlanta Falcons (3-10) at the Georgia Dome in a matchup between two teams battling for pride. The Falcons will be facing Kirk Cousins instead of superstar sophomore Robert Griffin III, thanks to Redskins coach Mike Shanahan's desire to keep RGIII healthy heading into next year. "I want to make sure he's healthy," Shanahan said. "I think that's the most important thing going into the offseason, that he has his first full offseason being healthy. And if he did play, and something happened to him, I think it would set our franchise back."
Cousins is excited about his opportunity to play, but wishes his big chance came under different condititions. "These are not the circumstances you necessarily want to be in when you start the season, but good or bad I got to be ready to go," Cousins said. "I can't control a lot of things going on, but I can control my preparation and I can control how I lead this team this weekend."
The Facons were leading at halftime of the NFC Championship a year ago, but have been done in by multiple injuries all over the roster. The season-ending foot fracture to wideout Julio Jones and lingering maladies suffered by Roddy White in particular damaged a once high-flying offense.
"It's tough on everybody," offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter said. "Nobody has higher expectations for the Falcons than the players and the coaches do. We haven't lived up to expectations. We haven't played as well as we're capable of on offense."
