Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star Karl Anthony-Towns has torn the meniscus in his left knee and will be out indefinitely, per Sham Charnia.
Charnia reported that Towns has been gathering a second opinion on the injury over the last 24 hours.
Towns has been putting together a strong season up to this point, averaging 22.1 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game while making his fourth NBA All-Star appearance. He led the Timberwolves to their best record in the Western Conference at 43-19, the best the team has been since he was drafted in 2015.
It's unclear when the All-Star big man got hurt either during their previous game against the Portland Trail Blazers or during practice.
Definitely disappointing for Towns, who had missed time last season after suffering a grade three calf strain last season, where he missed 53 games.
This is a big blow for the Timberwolves as they've been a top team in the West on the shoulders of Towns, Edwards, and Gobert. They are currently in a battle with the Oklahoma City Thunder, who are only a game back from the first seed.
The Denver Nuggets and the Los Angeles Clippers have also been on Minnesota's trail as they both have turned up their play. It isn't likely that the Timberwolves will fall out in the Western Conference Playoff picture, but they could potentially lose home-court advantage throughout the month.
Anthony Edwards has been having a breakout season so far in the Twin Cities and has benefited much from having a stellar second option in Towns. Edwards will now have to carry more of the load on offense, hoping KAT could be back in time for the playoffs.
It's likely that the Timberwolves fans can see more minutes for guys like Kyle Anderson or Naz Reid. The Wolves went out and gave veteran small forward T.J. Warren a 10 day contract to fill the gap at the position in the short term.
