The San Antonio Spurs Victor Wembanyama has been on fire.
On the same night that featured big-time matchups such as the Nuggets taking down the Heat and the Warriors picking up a win against the Knicks, the San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama broke history against the Oklahoma City Thunder once again that night.
The rookie sensation stuffed the stat sheet in the Spurs' 132-118 upset win against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Wembanyama dropped 28 points,13 rebounds, seven assists, five blocks, and two steals while shooting 5 for 6 in three-pointers.
He became the first player in NBA history to record 25+ points, 10+ rebounds, 5+ assists, 5+ three-pointers, and 5+ blocks in a game.
Wembanyama helped his team rally in the fourth quarter, making big plays down the stretch to give San Antonio the win.
The Spurs had an unusual offensive explosion last night, shooting 49 percent from long range on Thursday and almost 40 percent from the field.
It was a huge win for the struggling Spurs, who returned home from their annual rodeo road trip.
"It's a lot of mental," Wembanyama explained after the game.
"You know Kobe (Bryant) said to win a game, it mostly takes shots, big shots, because they don't call like any fouls. It's not as much the physical battle. Even though in defense, it's 90 percent effort, but offensively, it's a lot of mental."
Victor Wembanyama Throughout February
The month of February was a good one for the Spurs rookie.
Wembanyama looked poised throughout the month with several big-time performances despite coming up short in several of them.
Wembanyama became the third player to average 20 points, ten rebounds, five assists, and five blocks over a seven-game span since 1973-74, joining David Robinson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
It was also the third time this month that Wembanyama had 25 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and five blocks in a game.
Rookie of the Year: Wemby Vs Chet
The Rookie of the Year race for the 2023-2024 season has come down between Chet Holmgren and Victor Wembanyama.
With the Spurs' win over the Thunder and Wemby's play throughout February, it might have swayed voters to go with the French sensation over Holmgren, who has also built a strong case for the Rookie of the Year.
Wemby outdueled Chet, who dropped 20 points against the Spurs in the Thunder loss. Despite the loss, Chet is also having a spectacular season for the Oklahoma City Thunder, averaging 17.3 points per game and becoming a major contributor to the Thunder's success this season.
However, one may argue that Wembanyama's numbers have looked better this season.
We have a long way to go before the season closes and the Thunder are currently competing for the number one seed in the Western Conference while the Spurs are playing for ping pong balls.
Still, anything could happen in the national basketball association.
