Michael Jordan is regarded by many as the Greatest of All Time in basketball, but there is one thing fans try to bury deep in their memory-his atrocious performance in the NBA 3-Point Shootout.
MJ participated in the 1990 contest, and it seemed like the aliens took away his talent. He shot 16.67 percent or 5/30, which continues to be the worst shooting percentage in the competition.
The NBA All-Star 2024 is here, and the 3-Point shootout will be held on the very birthday of Jordan-February 17.
Players participating for this year's edition are defending champion Damian Lillard (Milwaukee Bucks), Jalen Brunson (New York Knicks), Tyrese Haliburton (Indiana Pacers), Lauri Markkanen (Utah Jazz), Malik Beasley (Bucks), Donovan Mitchell (Cleveland Cavaliers), Trae Young, (Atlanta Hawks), and Karl-Anthony Towns (Minnesota Timberwolves).
The goal is to win the competition. Another is not to break the record of MJ because, one, that is a dishonorable distinction, and two, they are not Michael Jordan.
Aside from MJ, here are the four other players who make the Top 5 worst 3-Point Shootout performances ever.
5. Clyde Drexler, 1991
Playing for the Portland Trail Blazers then, Drexler is another NBA great who surprisingly performed flat in the contest. He converted just 8 of his 30 shots for 26.67.
The 1991 edition was won by Craig Hodges, who offset MJ's performance the year before by going 21 for 25 on the first salvo, a record for most shots made in a single round.
He also made 19 shots in a row, which is also a record. He then won the competition in the next two years.
Drexler probably did not have a real chance. He is part of the NBA 75, though.
Drexler shares the fifth worst performance with Sam Perkins (1997) and Steve Smith (2002), who also shot 8 out of 30.
4. Antoine Walker 2003
Walker is a three-point specialist, but surprisingly, that part of his game did not surface.
He joined the 3-point shootout in 2003 and shot just 23.33 percent or 7 out of 30.
Peja Stojaković won the edition to defend his title by shooting 22/30.
3. Kevin Huerter, 2023
This one's very recent and made many question whether the game has evolved.
Kevin Huerter was the Sacramento Kings' representative in the All-Star Weekend in Salt Lake.
He shot 8 out of 40 or 20 percent. That is far from his percentage from the three-point line heading to the All-Star Game.
His record should have an asterisk, though, as he shot more shots than others. Still, that is the third worst ever. And he is not Michael Jordan.
Damian Lillard won the contest that year.
2. Vladimir Radmanovic, 2005
The 2005 edition was a battle between pure shooters and up-and-coming players, but Vladimir Radmanović of the Seattle Supersonics stood out for almost reaching the territory owned by MJ.
He was six out of 30 or 20 percent to end up in the last spot and get tagged as the second-worst 3-point shootout performer of all time.
Quentin Richardson won the 2005 contest. Other participants were Ray Allen, Joe Johnson, Voshon Lenard, and Kyle Korver.
