In what could be an appropriate ending to the Texas football coaching saga, Nick Saban signed a contract extension with the Alabama Crimson Tide and Mack Brown is staying with the Longhorns out of spite.
Burntorangenation.com is reporting via multiple tweets from media sources that Mack Brown looks to be staying in Texas in 2014. Brown met with Texas president Bill Powers and new athletic Steve Patterson on Friday to discuss Brown's future.
The Texas coach, who led the Longhorns to the 2005 national championship, has gone just 30-20 in the last four years.
After Texas' 30-10 loss to Baylor in what amounted to the Big 12 championship game, several media outlets, including Orangebloods.com, reported that Brown was ready to resign his position.
A source told ESPN that Brown was ready to leave Texas but had a change of heart after the original Orangebloods.com report:
"Brown had previously confided in those close to him that he was resigning, the source said," ESPN reported. "However, Brown was 'enraged' when the news leaked to the media, and he decided to change course, according to the source."
The original Orangebloods.com report came from columnist Chip Brown. On Friday, Orangebloods.com publisher Geoff Ketchum tweeted a conflicting report.
"A source tells OB that one of the most prominent high school coaches in the state was informed in the last hour that Mack is staying," Ketchum tweeted.
Bobby Burton at 247sports.com and ESPN.com's Max Olson followed suit in their tweets.
Texas held its football banquet on Friday night and while neither Patterson nor Brown addressed Brown's future. According to a tweet by SB Nation's Wescott Eberts, however, Patterson said to Brown, "Hopefully, we'll be able to get together and work many years to come."
Burntorangenation.com reported that Brown echoed Patterson's sentiments about working together.
No timetable has been determined, or even projected about an official announcement on Brown's future.
"When we have something to announce, we'll announce it," Patterson told reporters, according to ESPN.
