Following Dan Quinn taking the head coaching job with the Washington Commander, the Dallas Cowboys have recently interviewed former New York Jets coach Rex Ryan for the defensive coordinator opening, CBS Sports' Josina Anderson first reported the news.
Ryan hasn't been on an NFL team's coaching staff since 2016, when he was last seen as the head coach of the Buffalo Bills.
It was in Buffalo where he coached for two seasons, but saw little success, failing to get to the playoffs in both seasons.
Prior to coaching in Buffalo, Rex Ryan was the head coach of the New York Jets from 2009 to 2013. With the Jets, Ryan led the team to back to back AFC Championship games in 2009 and 2010.
He spent time in Baltimore, as a defensive line coach, where he helped the Ravens defense win Super Bowl XXXV.
A return to the NFL seems likely for Ryan, as the current ESPN analyst gained some traction as a potential candidate for the Denver Broncos defensive coordinator job last season before the franchise opted to stick with Vance Joseph.
Now Ryan joins a competitive defensive coordinator field that includes Ron Rivera and former Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer.
