The Philadelphia 76ers announced that Joel Embiid would be out indefinitely with a Lateral Meniscus Injury in his left knee.

An MRI was done following the Sixers' 119-107 loss to the Golden State Warriors, revealing the injury.

ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski reported Embiid will be out through the rest of the weekend while the Sixers explore treatment options for their All-Star big man; missing the Sixers matchup against the Brooklyn Nets.

The injury occurred in the fourth quarter of the Sixers' matchup against the Warriors when forward Jonathan Kuminga fell on Embiid going after a loose ball, causing his knee to bend awkwardly.

The big man was shown to be in pain, grabbing at his knee; he was eventually able to leave the court under his own power, limping to the locker room.

It's unclear how many games the reigning MVP will miss. Embiid has already missed two games due to soreness in the knee, including the Sixers' matchup against the Portland Trail Blazers and their Saturday game against Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets. Embiid missed 12 games overall this season so far.

The Philadelphia 76ers are currently the fifth seed in the eastern conference with a record 29-17 on the season and were able to pick up a 127-124 win against the Utah Jazz without Embiid suiting up.

Newly announced All-Star point guard, Tyrese Maxey had a great game dropping 51 points. Even with Maxey rising as an All-Star, staying competitive in a tough Eastern Conference would take a lot of work if Embiid is to miss any significant time.

The injury would likely knock Embiid out of the MVP race due to the NBA rule change discouraging load management, requiring a player to play in at least 20 minutes in 65 games to be eligible for awards.

Embiid was in the midst of an MVP-caliber season, leading the NBA in scoring while averaging 35.3 points per game, along with 11.3 rebounds and 5.7 assists.

Embiid was named an All-Star starter last week, it's assumed that Adam Silver may look to replace the star big man.
