The Seattle Seahawks are finalizing a deal with Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator, Mike Macdonald, to be their next head coach, according to ESPN Adam Schefter, on Wednesday.
Schefter reports that McDonald is reportedly set to receive a contract of up to six years.
Macdonald met the Seahawks for interviews on Tuesday and Wednesday, as Seahawks general manager John Schneider met with Macdonald for the first time earlier this week.
The Seahawk will go from having the oldest head coach in the NFL with Peter Carroll, who was 72 years old, to replace him with Macdonald, who is set to become the youngest coach in the league at 36.
Mike Macdonald's Path to Head Coach of Seahawks
Macdonald got his start as a coaching intern with the Baltimore Ravens after four seasons as a part of the coaching staff at the University of Georgia.
He would spend six seasons with the Ravens serving as a defensive coaching intern (2014), defensive assistant (2015-16), a defensive backs coach (2017), and a linebackers coach (18-20).
In 2021 he served as defensive coordinator at the University Of Michigan under John Harbugh's brother, Jim, before returning to the Ravens in 2022.
Last year, he was able to help the Baltimore Ravens achieve the top seed in the AFC. Under Macdonald, the Ravens allowed the fewest points scored and sixth-fewest yards in the NFL.
The Seahawks had to wait before signing Macdonald as they couldn't have interviewed Macdonald until after the playoffs due to the NFL rules.
Macdonald was one of the coaches who was heavenly targeted by teams like the Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Tennessee Titans, Los Angeles Chargers, and Washington Commanders all inquiring about his services.
The Seahawks have contacted nine candidates, including New York Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, Dallas Cowboys DC Dan Quinn, Carolina Panthers DC Ejiro Evero, Lions OC Ben Johnson, and Mike Macdonald.
Macdonald would inherit a Seahawk team that went 9-8 last season under Carroll, who missed the playoffs in two of their previous three seasons.
Macdonald inherits a team whose defense has been amongst the league's worst over the last few years, along with questions surrounding quarterback Geno Smith's contract.
Now, the Seahawks look to assemble a coaching staff for Mike MacDonald after moving on from Carroll.
