The days until Adrien Broner takes on Marcos Maidana on Showtime are dwindling and throughout the promotion "The Problem," known for his loudmouth antics, has been surprisingly reserved.
While he has taken a few potshots at his opponent Saturday night they've been of the boxing variety, boasting about his own skill level. This lead up has been a far cry from the vicious personal attacks Broner lobbed at Paulie Malignaggi.
Against the "Magic Man," Broner called him "Paulette," bragged about having sex with Malignaggi's former girlfriend, and publicly stated that Malignaggi hit her because "she said he can't knock anyone out." After the fight, which Broner won via split decision, a brief sex tape involving The Problem and two women was leaked onto the internet.
At this point, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer felt the need to chat with the brash Broner about his behavior, according to Yahoo!. "I didn't know how he was going to take it, but I had to have a talk with Adrien and I had to let him know what it took to really be a star in this boxing business," Schaefer said.
Broner has been likened to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in many ways. Broner employs Floyd's shoulder roll defense, has referred to Floyd as his "big bro," and most importantly mimicked the worst parts of Mayweather's public persona. According to Yahoo!, the chat Schaefer had was reminiscent of the one he had with Mayweather during the promotion of his bout with Oscar De La Hoya.
Leading up to that battle, which spawned "Money" Mayweather and made him the biggest name in boxing, Floyd had been a crass nuisance, offending Oscar personally and racially. He even went as far as presenting De La Hoya with a chicken at a press conference. "I was ready to send him home [off the tour]," Schaefer said of Mayweather.
Now, Floyd Mayweather Jr. is still brash, but he has matured and is known as much for his relentless training as his grand persona. Broner might be taking the same route, as quotes like this are better for business. "I took this fight because a lot of people were saying that I was picking my opponents and I haven't fought any legitimate fighters, but I was just blessed with the talent. I make good fighters look basic.
"Now, I take on El Chino Maidana, hard-hitting knockout artist, Argentine superstar, pretty face, what can I say? It's going to be a hell of a fight."
