Jeremy Medina, a senior high school baseball player at Gainesville High School who was left in a coma after a batting cage accident, passed away on Tuesday, December 12, per his family. He was only 18 years old.
Medina, a pitcher and catcher for Gainesville, was accidentally hit in the head by a teammate's baseball bat during practice on November 20, CBS Sports reported.
Medina was allegedly leaning into the net at the time and was accidentally struck in the head by another player who was following through on his swing, WSB-TV reported.
According to high school principal Jamie Green, there was no horseplay, misconduct, or intent in the unfortunate incident.
Medina organs to be donated
After the teen was declared brain dead by doctors, the family planned to donate his organs, which was allegedly by Jeremy's wishes.
"We know Jeremy was and will always be in God's hands and we will see him soon," an official statement from the Medina family read. "We are grateful for all the prayers and support over the last three weeks, and we appreciate everyone's understanding as we take time now to be with our family."
Honor walk for Jeremy Medina
The family also added that they plan to hold an honor walk, a ceremony to commemorate a patient whose organs are being donated. This will be held at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where Jeremy was a patient, per NBC News.
"We began the process of seeking a visa for his grandmother so she could travel to be with us for the honor walk," part of the family's post read on the Jeremy Median Facebook page. "Sadly, his heart stopped last night about an hour before grandma arrived."
