Jordan Travis is undoubtedly one of the promising players in college football, and most wonder how the Florida State Seminoles would have fared had he been able to finish the season.
The 23-year-old saw an abrupt end to his season after suffering a severe leg injury against North Alabama. He got the injury trying to get extra yards, but the intent came at a cost after his leg was caught underneath a defender, resulting in his ankle twisting awkwardly, ESPN reported.
Regardless, Travis was someone who many felt had a serious case for the Heisman Trophy award. Unfortunately, he was not among the finalists named on Monday, December 3, via CBS Sports.
The four finalists were LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels, Oregon quarterback Bo Nix, Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr., and Ohio State wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr.
Travis and another player, Jalen Milroe, failed to make the final list, drawing heavy criticism. But what could have been the reasons behind excluding the Seminoles quarterback?
1. The Seminoles could win without Jordan Travis.
Although it may not be the sanest of reasons, the fact that the Seminoles were able to stay the course and win games after Travis suffered the injury could have factored in.
Although he was credited with standing out in most of Florida State's wins, the drive to continue its winning ways may have worked against them and at Travis' expense, per CNN. The Seminoles held their heads above water, making the necessary adjustments with the senior play-caller done for the season.
2. College Football Committee had its criteria.
Take nothing away from Travis Jordan and what he did this season; if not for that leg injury, he would have easily been among the finalists for the Heisman Trophy.
It is possible that the committee considered how a team was able to perform without a particular player. Given that the Seminoles still managed to win two games without Travis could have been a reason. If so, that would be unfair since there is no telling how the Seminoles' campaign would have gone if Travis was not around, per Tallahasee.com.
In all, Travis led the Seminoles for the majority of their wins. The injury he sustained was not of his liking, so assessing how a team performs even without a key figure is unfair.
3. Travis's leg injury was a big deal.
Any athlete would dread having an injury, and it was unfortunate that Travis got one at the wrong time.
Regardless, he should not blame himself for the injury and apologize to FSU supporters. It could not be avoided, especially in a highly physical sport.
It was heartbreaking for him, and Seminoles fans are backing him up and feeling for him, per USA Today. Perhaps at least considering the efforts of the young play-caller would have been dignified rather than leaving him out and choosing to focus on healthy and active players.
The committee may argue that the four finalists deserve their spot and many others. They can contend that it was a hard decision to make. But at the end of the day, that decision will leave a lot of players heartbroken - Jordan Travis in particular.
