Pittsburgh Pirates' star outfielder and National League MVP Andrew McCutchen proposed to his girlfriend during a recent episode of the Ellen DeGeneres show.

McCutchen had promised his fans a "big announcement" before appearing on Wednesday's show, but by the time all was said and done the most shocked one in the crowd appeared to be girlfriend Maria Hansloven.

After setting up a video talking about their relationship, McCutchen called his now fiancee to the stage and said "I didn't do any of this for the publicity. I didn't do any of this for recognition. I did this to show you that if I could tell the whole world how much I love you, I would do that."

Moments later, McCutcheon dropped to one knee, presented the ring and popped the question.

It's been a storybook type year for the 27-year-old McCutchen, who hit .317 with 21 HR and 84 RBI in winning his MVP award. The three-time All-Star also stole 28 bases and ranked as one of the game's best defensive outfielders. His heroics led the Pirates to their first postseason experience since the 1992 season and early era of Barry Bonds.
